The Queen’s Gambit: A Brief Introduction
The Queen’s Gambit revolves around the life of an orphan chess prodigy Beth Hamon. Beth is in the quest to become the world’s greatest chess player. But some serious drawbacks are pulling her back. Beth is suffering from chronic drug and alcohol dependency. Mind you, she is a very strong character! The story begins in Lexington, Kentucky. A nine-year-old Beth lost her mother in a car crash. Her father died long back owing to some mysterious disease. Beth is taken to an orphanage. What follows?
Mr. Shaibel, the custodian taught her chess. Beth’s drug addiction started while taking tranquilizer pills in the orphanage. Beth’s amazing visualization skills were enhanced by the tranquilizer which helped her to play chess like no one else. Quite twisting, isn’t it? A few years later Beth was adopted by Alma Wheatly and her husband from Lexington. Later on, she participates in a chess tournament and cracked it. The spoils of the competition gave her a pathway to buy more and more drugs and alcohol causing a sure downfall.
What can we expect from the series?
The Queen’s Gambit is a 2020 American miniseries based on Walter Tevis’s novel. Walter Tevis wrote the book back in 1983. It was recreated by Scott Frank in association with Netflix and Allan Scott. The story is set in the mid-1950s and proceeding into the 1960s. After four weeks of release, The Queen’s Gambit became Netflix’s most-watched miniseries. It received critical appreciation from many viewers. Beth, played by Anya Taylor was loved. What do you guys think? I loved it though.
The development started back in 2019. The series was originally planned to have five episodes which was later increased to six. Fun-fact, Scott tried to convert the book to a series since 1992, right after he bought the screenplay rights from Walter Tevis’ widow. Walter Tevis received an appreciable amount of help from The World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov and chess coach Bruce Pandolfini. Together they devised hundreds of chess positions for various situations in the script. Later grandmasters Arshak Petrosian and Vladmir Akopian did their part by introducing outstanding chess moves to the protagonist Beth.
