In the Fiscal Year Ending March 2021: Corporate Management Policy Briefing that was held on Wednesday, Nintendo announced that a Super Mario Bros. Movie based on the game franchise is in the making. The movie is projected to release by 2022 and will be financed by Nintendo as well as Universal Pictures and the movie will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.
The Movie will be handled by Universal Studio’s subsidiary Illumination Entertainment, some of their works include Despicable Me, Minions and Sing. This was revealed back in 2018 and according to the recent briefing the “Production has been moving ahead smoothly”.
Discussion About The Movie | Super Mario Bros.
The talks about the Super Mario Bros Animated film have been in talks and rumours dating all the back to a BuzzFeed report which said Nintendo is in talks with Sony Pictures about the film rights to the Super Mario Bros back in 2014.

In November of 2018, Illumination Entertainment’s founder Chris Meledandri told Variety, an entertainment news source, that the Film was in its priority development and would most likely debut in 2022. Another important thing to take away from the interviews, as well as Briefings, is that Shigeru Miyamoto, the Creator of Super Mario Bros, is closely involved in the making of the movie and will be co-producing it with Chris Meledandri.
However, it’s also been noted that Illumination Entertainment could very much take up multiple Movies from that franchise in the future but as of now, only one movie has been confirmed. This has also been mentioned in the briefing, that Nintendo is looking to expand Super Mario Bros outside of just being a video game series.
Besides this will not be the first major collaboration between Nintendo and Universal Pictures, as it’s also been discussed that Universal Studios will make Nintendo attractions for its Universal Studios Japan, along with other resorts and parks. In 2017, Universal Studios Japan began the construction of its “Super Nintendo World attraction”.
Latest Games | Super Mario Bros.
The Super Mario Maker 2 was launched for Nintendo Switch back in 2019 and the Super Mario 3D All-Stars Compilation game will be arriving for the Switch on Friday. The Super Mario Bros Franchise has been nothing short of a success and many of these big leaps in project stem from the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the franchise. It’s been one of the longest-running gaming franchise and is intended to continue to grow more and more with each passing year.
