Stan Laurel began his film career in 1917 and remained active until he died in 1965. He was a member of “Fred Karno’s Army” and Charlie Chaplin’s understudy. In 1921, Laurel co-starred in the film short The Lucky Dog with his comic partner Oliver Hardy. A bronze statue of the couple was unveiled in Laurel’s hometown of Ulverston in 2009. They appeared in over 40 Roach sound shorts, including Hog Wild, Helpmates, and Towed in a Hole. When Laurel and Hardy worked for Twentieth Century-Fox, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s, the importance of artistic license became clear. The team’s comedy suffered as those studios denied them the creative input to which they had grown accustomed. However, they remained popular with wartime audiences.

Arthur Stanley Jefferson was born in Ulverston, Lancashire, on June 16, 1890. He was the son of actor and theatre manager Arthur J. Jefferson and Margaret (née Metcalfe) Laurel. At the age of 16, he gave his first professional performance on stage at the Panopticon in Glasgow. He drew his standard comic devices, such as his bowler hat and nonsensical understatement, from the music hall. In 1910, he joined Fred Karno’s acting troupe under the stage name “Stan Jefferson” He grew up in the music hall, and he worked as Charlie Chaplin’s understudy for a while.

On June 5, 1917, he registered for military service in America during World War I. He was not called up because of his residency status. However, later he made his career in movies.

Laurel’s British accent and Hardy’s Southern tones were ideal for their roles. To make the most of the soundtrack, Laurel devised several ingenious audio gags.

Laurel died on February 23, 1965, at the age of 74, four days after having a heart attack. Minutes before his death, he told his nurse that he would like to go skiing, to which she replied that she had no idea he was a skier. “I’m not,” Laurel responded, “I’d rather be doing that than this!” He died quietly in his armchair a few minutes later.
