Julie Ertz was born on 6 April 1992 in Mesa, Arizona, to Kristi and David Johnston. She has a sister named Melanie Johnston, who is also a soccer player. The Johnston sisters played their initially matches with Serena Soccer Club. She was introduced to soccer through her local ASYO region. Initially, she just started playing as her hobby, and with time, as she developed an interest in the game, Julie decided to build a career in soccer.
Ertz was a member of the Santa Clara University women’s soccer team. The National Soccer Coaches Association named her WCC Freshman of the Year and All-American First-Team. She led the Broncos in goals with eight and was second on the team in assists with five in 2012. Julie Ertz was named the United States Soccer Federation’s Young Female Athlete of the Year in 2013.
For the Western Washington Broncos, she appeared in 79 games and scored 31 goals. The Chicago Red Stars selected Ertz in first round of the 2014 NWSL College Draft. Following the 2014 season, she was named Rookie of the Year. She missed the majority of the 2015 season due to commitments with the US women’s team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
