Johnny Depp’s new upcoming film Mimanata now has a home. The upcoming drama film has been acquired by MGM under its American International Pictures label. Also, the film now also has a release date. So, we can say that things are definitely going smoothly for Minamata. Moreover, apart from the US, MGM has also acquired rights for Canada, Germany, and Switzerland. Minamata opened last February at the Berlin Film Festival; and recieved mixed reception from critics.
The 2020 drama film is helmed by Andrew Levitas and is based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. Johnny Depp will lead the movie, and will also produce his new project.
On the other hand, Jason Forman, Stephen Reuters, Peter Touche, Stephen Spence, Peter Watson, and Marie-Gabrielle Stewart will serve as the executive producers. Also, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Norman Merry, Peter Hampden, Nobu Hasegawa, and Joe Hasegawa will join them.
Depp’s new movie can help him divert his mind from everything else happening in his life. Recently, the star filed a case against The Sun for calling him a ‘wife-beater’ in an article over his dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Production And Release Date
The idea for the film birthed in 2018, and it was then decided that Johnny Depp will be playing photojournalist Eugene Smith in the new movie Minamata. In 2019, the filming began in Japan, Serbia, and Montenegro.
The movie had its world premiere on 21st February 2020. Now for the theatre release, Minamata will release on 5th February 2021 in the US under American International Pictures. However, for the UK, Vertigo is releasing the movie on 12th February 2021.
Writer and director Levitas said that he is humbled and pleased that wonderful distributors (MGM, NGOs) have taken up their project. He was also grateful to them for contributing to their efforts to bring light to Minamata’s people. In the end, he also mentioned how Minamata is a story of hope, passion, and community. He said that society might be the parts per million, but together we are the millions.
Plot And Cast
The movie is based on real-life events captured by war photographer W. Eugene Smith. Depp will play Smith, who travels to Japan to capture and document the disastrous aftermath of mercury poisoning in the coastal communities.
The film stars Johnny Depp as Eugene Smith, Bill Nighy as Robert Hayes, Hiroyuki Sanada as Mitsuo Yamazaki, Minami Hinase as Aileen, Jun Kunimura as Junichi Nojima, and Tadanobu Asano as Tatsuo Matsumura. Also, Ryo Kase, Katherine Jenkins, Masayoshi Haneda appear in the film as Kiyoshi, and Millie, respectively.
