The spinoff series of How I Met Your Mother, How I Met Your Father is coming to Hulu. Everything we know about the actors, plot, and release date is included below. The long-awaited spinoff of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, dubbed How I Met Your Father, is finally here, and here’s all we know thus far. Ted Mosby recounts how he met their mother to his children Luke and Penny in 2030 in How I Met Your Mother, with the series focused on the happenings of Ted and his close-knit group of pals Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin from 2005 to 2014. Ted ultimately meets his future wife (revealed to be Cristin Milioti) in the controversial finale of How I Met Your Mother, despite Ted tells how she died from a hidden illness a few years previously.
Following the conclusion of How I Met Your Mother, there were reports that a spinoff would follow a woman as the major character, telling her children how she met their father. The cast of HIMYM was not expected to return or have any genuine relationship to the new characters; the new show’s story premise would simply be gender-flipped. According to How I Met Your Father, this operates similarly to how the Hulu series’ spinoff link works.

It’s Finally Happening: How I Met Your Father
Hulu has purchased ten episodes of How I Met Your Father, which have been in development since the finale of How I Met Your Mother in 2014. According to Variety, the showrunners of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, will remain as executive producers, while Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, the new showrunners and main writing team, will come from NBC’s family drama This Is Us. The series for How I Met Your Father was announced in April 2021 [via The Hollywood Reporter], with Bays and Thomas of HIMYM saying in a joint statement.
Kids, I’m going to tell you a fantastic tale: It’s the story of how two writers were fortunate enough to have their dream TV show for nine seasons and now have the opportunity to pass the torch to a new creative team with their own wonderful story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father.
The cast of How I Met Your Father
After Duff was cast in the lead role of Sophie in early May, actor Chris Lowell was cast alongside her on June 16th, according to Deadline. Lowell will play Sophie’s pal Jesse, a brilliant and edgy guy who is skeptical about love, following his roles in Promising Young Woman and Netflix’s GLOW. Jesse is an aspiring musician who supports himself by driving for Uber.
Cattrall revealed on Instagram on November 5 that she will be joining the cast of HIMYF. “Variety reports that Cattrall will return as a future version of Sophie [Duff’s character].” Valentina, Sophie’s roommate, and an aspiring stylist, will be played by Francia Raisa of Grown-ish. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Valentina is “impulsive and bold,” and Sophie leans to her for positive reinforcement when she’s upset. She had recently returned from London Fashion Week with Charlie, a British aspiring model played by The Royals star Tom Ainsley, with whom she fell in love during the trip.
More About the Cast Details:
Charlie is a kind person, but he was born to conservative, wealthy parents and has spent his entire life in an upper-class bubble. While THR had stated that Charlie lives with his best buddy Tom, the outlet later clarified that his best friend and roommate is Sid, who is played by Suraj Sharma from God Friended Me. “A new bar owner [who] plays the optimist to Jesse’s pessimism,” Sid is described as.
Tien Tran, who played Ellen, Jesse’s adopted sister, rounds out the core cast. She’s recently moved to New York after divorcing her wife and leaving their tiny farming village, a setting that suits her better than the crowded NYC clubs where her pals congregate.
There’s no word on whether the original cast of HIMYM, which includes Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, and Radnor, will make a cameo or even reprise their roles in the spinoff. But fear not: Duff is already lobbying for their return, saying, “Hopefully, we’ll have some great guest appearances from the original cast.”
The Story of How I Met Your Father
According to Hulu, How I Met Your Father’s HIMYM-inspired drama will follow Sophie as she recounts the story of how she met her father to her kid in the future. Sophie and her best friends are figuring out their places and ambitions in life in 2022, which is similar to the idea of How I Met Your Mother. She and her friends will be juggling friendships and modern dating, attempting to fall in love with the help of dating apps and other cutting-edge methods of meeting potential mates. Sophie is exhausted of so many failed Tinder matches, according to the Hulu description of How I Met Your Father, but she is still desperate to find her partner in New York City.
While the show’s main relationship to How I Met Your Mother is its gender-role flip of the main concept, the showrunners have hinted that it will tie to the original series as well. Many have speculated that the characters from How I Met Your Father linked to HIMYM signal cameos from characters from the original series, such as Barney Stinson, although no such crossovers have been confirmed. Nonetheless, How I Met Your Father can be present in the HIMYM universe in a variety of ways. Although it may appear to be the most obvious link, How I Met Your Father’s bar is not MacLaren’s Pub, which means alternate story components will have to be shared across the two episodes.
When Does How I Met Your Father Come Out?
On January 18, 2022, Hulu will air How I Met Your Father. The first two episodes of the series will air on January 18, followed by the remaining eight episodes in weekly installments. While it’s fantastic that the series is kicking off the year with a brand-new sitcom, the episodes will lose out on the string of October through December holidays that helped make HIMYM’s first season so memorable. The finale of How I Met Your Father is likewise planned to premiere on or around March 15, 2022. Only 10 episodes ordered by Hulu.
Trailer for How I Met Your Father
On Dec. 16, the first official trailer for How I Met Your Father was released, and it tells the story of modern dating and all the drama that comes with it. Sophie, Duff’s character, says, “I’ve gone on 87 Tinder dates this year.” Cattrall also appears as Sophie’s elder form, filling the Cattrall-shaped vacuum that SATC fans had been missing for a long time. Josh Peck of Drake & Josh is standing at Sophie’s door in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance.
What part does Duff play in the show?
Sophie, the show’s heroine, and a narrator, will be played by Duff, who will recount her son the narrative of how she met his father. Sophie and her close-knit group of friends live—where else?—in New York City as the story begins in 2021.
On the show, Duff also works as a producer.
“Throughout my career, I’ve had the honor of portraying some fantastic characters, and I’m looking forward to playing Sophie.” “Carter and [HIMYM founders] Carter and Craig would put their infant in my hands,” says Carter.” Carter and [HIMYM creators] Carter and Craig would trust me with their baby,” Duff told Deadline. “Isaac and Elizabeth are fantastic, and I’m excited to collaborate with them and all of their genius.” I’m ecstatic to be joining the Hulu Originals and 20th Century Fox families. I understand these are large shoes to fill, and I’m looking forward to slipping my 6 12s in.”
What will the format of the show be?
In the same way as the original, HIMYF will use both multi-camera and single-camera technologies. Sophie will tell her son how she navigated the ups and downs of dating, working, and developing enduring friendships in Manhattan, much like Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) did.
Her story, on the other hand, is set in the digital age of social media and dating applications. HIMYF’s 2021 premiere will be very different from HIMYM’s 2006 premiere, which raises another question: Is COVID-19 going to be mentioned? Will Sophie include the pandemic in her trip to New York? No response yet, although the reboots of Sex and the City and Gossip Girl both alluded to the virus that ravaged New York City in 2020. (and rages on in the world). There’s a risk that this show will do the same.
