Michael V. Drake, the president of the University of California, announced his decision to step down at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. Serving as the first Black president in the system’s more than 150-year history, Drake has led the University through significant challenges, including the coronavirus pandemic, labor strikes, and campus protests.
In his statement, Drake expressed that his tenure was “the honor of a lifetime” and emphasized his pride in the accomplishments of the UC community during his leadership.
Drake began his role in July 2020, during a tumultuous time marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread racial justice protests following the murder of George Floyd.
His presidency has seen various high-profile incidents, including the 2022 strike by thousands of graduate student workers demanding higher pay and recent student protests related to the Gaza conflict. Despite these challenges, Drake has navigated the university through a period of significant upheaval.
Under Drake’s leadership, the University of California received a notable 5% annual budget increase from the state over five years, aimed at expanding enrollment and enhancing accessibility for underrepresented students.
He also played a crucial role in formulating plans to manage tuition rate increases and establish free tuition for Native American students from federally recognized tribes. These initiatives reflect his commitment to improving the university’s impact and inclusivity.
Before his presidency, Drake held prominent positions in higher education, including serving as chancellor at UC Irvine, president of The Ohio State University, and chair of the NCAA. His background as a physician, with training at the University of California, San Francisco, and a career as a professor of ophthalmology, underscores his extensive experience in academia and leadership.
California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Drake’s tenure, highlighting his graceful and visionary leadership. Newsom commended Drake for his contributions to expanding the UC system and fostering the development of future California leaders. The governor’s statement reflects widespread recognition of Drake’s impact and service in advancing higher education in the state.
