Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armourer on the set of the western film Rust, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and faced a maximum sentence of 18 months. During the sentencing hearing, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer lambasted Gutierrez-Reed for her reckless behavior and failure to follow safety protocols, stating that “you alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon” and that “Ms. Hutchins would be alive if you had done your job properly.”
The courtroom was filled with emotional reactions, including from Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey, who described the day of her daughter’s death as “the worst day of my life.” Solovey’s husband, Matthew, also spoke, sharing about the devastating impact of Hutchins’ death on their family. He expressed his longing to meet his wife again, stating “the day of her death ruined my entire life…every minute I wait until I’ll meet her again.”
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys had argued for a probation sentence, citing her youth and inexperience. However, the judge deemed a non-prison sentence inappropriate given the severity of the crime. The judge also pointed out that Gutierrez-Reed expressed little empathy for Hutchins’ family, showing a lack of remorse.
The fatal shooting of Hutchins has had a lasting impact on the film industry, leading to increased calls for greater attention to on-set safety protocols and stricter regulations governing firearms use. The incident has also led to renewed scrutiny of Alec Baldwin, who was initially charged but later had the charges dismissed. A grand jury re-indicted Baldwin in January 2024, accusing him of involuntary manslaughter through negligent use of a firearm.
The filming of Rust resumed last year in Montana, with Matthew Hutchins serving as an executive producer. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety on film sets and the devastating consequences of negligence and reckless behavior.
