European leaders gathered in a critical summit in Spain to reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, as concerns grew that Western resolve might be wavering. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for more military aid, citing the need for air defense systems, artillery shells, long-range missiles, and drones.

Zelensky stressed that the outcome of the war would have far-reaching implications for the entirety of Europe, stating that victory or defeat in Ukraine would determine the fate of all of Europe. This idea was echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who underscored the importance of Europe taking action, even if the US would commit to supporting Ukraine. Macron said, “Even if we are lucky to have such a committed American partner, we ourselves have to be totally committed, because this is in our immediate neighborhood.”

The summit came at a pivotal moment, following US President Joe Biden’s sudden signing of legislation to keep the federal government funded, but omitting billions in funding for Ukraine’s war effort. Biden also made phone calls to coordinate with other world leaders on Ukraine, amid concerns about the future of US aid.

Meanwhile, Europe faced its own doubts, with the recent election in Slovakia throwing into question the country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. However, despite these challenges, the summit mood remained largely supportive. Spain’s caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged new military aid to Ukraine, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Berlin was working on providing another Patriot air defense system.

Zelensky specifically thanked Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the UK for their commitments, urging leaders to remain committed, stating that Ukraine’s warriors would have more artillery and long-range weapons, and that justice would be served to Russian evil. With the war ongoing, European leaders vowed to continue supporting Ukraine, reaffirming their united stance against Moscow’s aggression. Zelensky praised the countries for their support, saying, “We are incredibly grateful for this support, and I believe that together, we will be able to achieve our goals.”

As the war continues, it is clear that the support of European leaders will be crucial in Ukraine’s quest for victory. The commitment to Ukraine’s plight is vital to ensure the country’s survival and to thwart Russian aggression.
