In a bold move, 20-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg has been fined 2,500 kronor (€216) by a Swedish court for disobeying police orders during an environmental protest at an oil facility last month. Thunberg, who admitted to the facts but denied guilt, argued that the fight against the fossil fuel industry is a form of self-defense due to the existential and global threat of the climate crisis. In a statement, she told journalists that she would “not back down” despite the conviction.
Thunberg was one of several youth activists from the Reclaim the Future movement who were charged with refusing a police order to disperse after blocking road access to an oil terminal in the southern Swedish city of Malmo on June 19th. The court rejected Thunberg’s argument, deeming her actions a crime. However, Irma Kjellstrom, a spokesperson for Reclaim the Future, said that the activists “have to be exactly where the harm is being done,” and that the court’s decision would not deter them from continuing their activism.
Despite the fine, Thunberg and her fellow activists seemed undeterred, returning to the oil terminal just a few hours after the court hearing to stage another roadblock. Thunberg’s courage is a testament to her conviction that the climate crisis requires immediate and drastic action, and that traditional approaches are no longer sufficient.
