Jorge Garay, 46, has been found guilty of murdering his 37-year-old partner Karla Godoy in Peru. The gruesome discovery was made on October 12th, after Peruvian authorities uncovered a makeshift grave containing Godoy’s body on land owned by Garay’s family in Lima. The investigation that followed revealed a chilling tale of betrayal and deception.
Godoy and Garay had left the UK on September 15th, 2022, and were meant to be on a holiday together. However, it quickly turned sour. According to the prosecution, the couple began arguing, and Godoy eventually ended up dead. Garay claimed he had acted in self-defence, but the evidence suggested otherwise.
Garay’s initial attempt to deceive his landlord and friends was only the beginning of his calculated cover-up. He claimed Godoy had stayed in Spain while he went to Peru, and that he had been robbed of his money and ID. He even went so far as to empty the flat they had rented in Dartford and return the keys, pretending Godoy had never been there.
It wasn’t until October 12th, when Garay made a confession over the phone, admitting to the murder, that the truth began to unravel. By then, it was too late, and Godoy’s body had already been found. The autopsy revealed that she had been strangled and buried in a shallow grave.
Garay’s arrest and subsequent charges brought the case to a close, but for Godoy’s family, the damage had already been done. Her relatives, who live in Honduras and Spain, had initially reported her missing, and the search for her had been in vain. It was only when Garay’s confession was made public that they finally had the answers they had been seeking.
As Garay awaits sentencing on July 28th, the family of Karla Godoy will have to come to terms with their loss, and the cruel and calculated way in which it was taken from them. But thanks to the tireless efforts of the investigating officers, justice has been served, and Garay will face the consequences of his actions.
