The ANASIS-II is intended to enhance the South’s capacity to defend alone versus the nuclear-armed North, which invaded in 1950.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the satellite blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Power Station in Florida, Seoul’s Defense Acquisition System Administration (DAPA) claimed in a assertion.

SpaceX confirmed the satellite deployed about 32 minutes following carry-off, on Monday afternoon regional time.

DAPA reported the launch produced South Korea the 10th region in the planet to have a military-only communications satellite, which will give “permanent and secured navy communications”.

The satellite is envisioned to achieve its orbit of 36,000 kilometres in two weeks and South Korea’s armed service will take about the method in Oct immediately after testing, it additional.

Seoul is looking to boost its armed forces abilities as it pushes to finish an arrangement less than which, if war breaks out, American commanders will have authority around their put together forces.

The satellite was “expected to enhance the South Korean military’s independent operational capabilities”, an official at its defence ministry told Yonhap information company.

Seoul and Washington are stability allies and the US stations 28,500 troops in the region.

But their partnership has been strained in latest yrs, triggered by discrepancies in their approaches to Pyongyang, and over charge-sharing responsibilities.
