Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: What Is It About?
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is a film adaptation of the playwright August Wilson’s stage drama of the same name. Wilson died in 2005 due to cancer. Originally, he was from Pittsburgh’s African American Hill District. However, Wilson was more into his neighborhood, and soon it became his muse and home for the upcoming years of his life. He co-founded Black Horizon Theatre and is widely known for his Pittsburgh cycle. Moreover, it consists of ten plays, one from each decade of the 20th century.
Each of his plays deals with the experience of a Black person living in America. However, the upcoming Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is an exception as it is not set in Pittsburgh. The most famous of them is Fences, a film based on it was launched in 2016. Daniel Washington, who has a deal to bring Wilson’s work to the streaming giant starred in the movie. Also, Viola Davis won an Academy Award for the movie.
